This week Ms. McPheeters' AP Research students (Savanna Amschl, Ava Copak, Damian Delgado, Will Guelinas, Jalyssa Miller, Bella Silva, and Julianne Silva) are embarking on the next phase of their research process as they present their project proposals for approval by LHS's Institutional Review Board (IRB). This year, these seven seniors are taking the second year of the two-year AP Capstone program.* So far, students have developed and revised a research question for their primary research, studied and selected an appropriate research method for their project, and designed the materials necessary for them to conduct their research. Now they will present their hard work to a panel of members from the school's IRB to ensure that they will conduct their research in a way that is ethical and that will produce quality results. In the photos, our AP Research students celebrate committing to their revised research questions for the duration of the school year. Once their proposals are IRB approved, the students will distribute their questionnaires, collect and analyze data, and communicate their findings through a 5,000 word scholarly research report and 20-minute presentation with oral defense. These two items will make up their College Board AP score. The pictures show when the AP students officially committed to their research questions, and celebrated with ring pops.
Additionally, thank you to Institutional Review Board members Pat Berkshire, Joseph Gianotti, Tim Higgins, Denise Houser, and Bridget Swinford for volunteering time out of your afternoons to review presentation proposals.
*The Capstone program consists of AP Seminar (an interdisciplinary course focusing on the development of students' critical thinking, writing, presenting, and collaborating skills) followed by AP Research (a course in which students design, conduct, analyze, and present their own primary research on a self-selected topic).
